چکیده

Fair sharing of bandwidth in distributed systems is considered. The inherently contentionbased medium access in distributed systems is modelled as a non-cooperative game: “Access Game”. It is shown that the Nash Equilibrium (NE) for incomplete information games is usually inefficient compared to the NE of complete information games. Consequently, simple mechanisms to approximate an incomplete information scenario as a complete information scenario are proposed. For complete information games, it is shown that the NE usually does not result in fairness. Therefore, we compute the Constrained Nash Equilibrium (CNE) of the “Access Game” with the fairness criteria as the constraints. It is shown that the CNE is unique.

Theoretical Analysis of Fair Bandwidth Sharing in Priority-based Medium Access

In this report, we present the priority-based Access Game which describes medium access that is based on priorities for collision resolution by Game Theory. For this purpose, we make some simplifying assumptions: a) each node always has a message to send, b) each node has messages of same length, and c) no communication errors occur. Given this game, we can show that selfish behavior of nodes i...

Diagnosing and Penalizing MAC Layer Misbehavior in Wireless Networks

Wireless Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols such as IEEE 802.11 use distributed contention resolution mechanisms for sharing the wireless channel. In this environment, selfish hosts that fail to adhere to the MAC protocol may obtain an unfair share of the channel bandwidth. For example, IEEE 802.11 requires nodes competing for access to the channel to wait for a “backoff” interval, randomly ...

Enhancing Wireless Medium Access Control Layer Misbehavior Detection System in IEEE 802.11 Network

Enhancing IEEE 802.11 in Selfish Environments

Wireless access protocols currently deployed in MANET use distributed contention resolution mechanisms for sharing the wireless channel. In this environment, selfish hosts that fail to adhere to the MAC protocol may obtain an unfair share of the channel bandwidth at the expense of performance degradation of well-behaved hosts. We present a novel access method, Predictable Random Backoff (PRB), ...
